The
Anxiety of Influences
|
...Is it possible to be the authentic disciple of Socrates, who suffered martyrdom without complaint, in order to affirm his truth? The ultimate anxiety of influence always may be, not that one's proper space has been usurped already, but that greatness may be unable to renew itself, that one's inspiration may be larger than one's own powers of realization....
Harold Bloom

Alejo Parella: All instruments
Almanso
is a pop rock band formed in Buenos Aires in 1996 by Juan Bazán -piano,
keyboards and voice- and Alejo Parella -guitars, keyboards and voice -. Both
recognize eclectic influences; from New Order and The Cure to Pat Metheny or
Tom Jobim, to name some. To the founding duo they were added in the different
stages of the band -in recordings, live composition or live presentations- several
collaborators whose contributions in guitar (Pablo de Speluzzi, Sebastián
Gómez, Santiago Diaz), bass (Sebastián Bianchini, Sebastián
Gómez) and drums (Claudio Maxit, Francisco Sanchez) has been very important
to make the band what it is today.
At the moment, Almanso has evolved towards electronic without losing the initial
spirit and influences. The only member is Alejo Parella, who is in charge of
composing the music, writing the lyrics and playing all the instruments, helped
by sequencers and computers for the rythmical bases.

The origins of
Cienfuegos go back to 1983, when they shared stage with Los violadores and Los
laxantes (grouping that integrated members of Todos tus muertos) in the dawn
of punk in Buenos Aires. In spite of the trip of Martín Aloe to Spain
to integrate "Lions in Love" and of Sergio Rotman and Fernando Ricciardi's
participation in Los fabulosos Cadillacs, Cienfuegos always stayed alive.
In 1994 Aloe returns definitively of Spain and Rotman leaves the Cadillacs (at
the best moment of this band), and he gave a definitive impulse to Cienfuegos.
They've released three albums in one of wich they've perpetrated to cosee of
Joy Division's Love will tear us apart.

One of best argie
guitarist of the '80s, Coleman formed its first group in 1982 along with Ulises
Butrón: Metrópoli. The band got to record 2 albums before separating.
After a short period with the at-that-time-unknown Soda Stereo, he integrated
Fricción as a side project (together with Fernando Samalea, Christian
Basso and Soda Stereo's Gustavo Cerati). Fricción was born of the informal
meetings between its members to play their own songs and the ones of their respective
bands. Being the group the "second occupation" of its members, it
didn't have a plan of work nor calendar of tour. Nevertheless, they were were
voted 1986's best newcomers by Clarín (Argentina's biggest news paper).
Charly Garci'a produced their debut album: "Consumación o consumo"
in 1986.
I didn't know that we were going to record a album. In fact i was recording
demos at Andrés Calamaro's house and ended up recording with him "Vida
Cruel" (1985). Charly García saw me in the studio and said to me:
"Che, I must finish some guitars, and make Fabiana Cantilo's album... why
don't you come with me?" And there I recorded guitars in "El monstruo
de la laguna" and a few more songs. It had Spinetta and Charly in the booth:
"Oh, God!", I was 21 years old".
In 1986 he returned transitorily to Soda Stereo, to participate in the recording
of the album "Signos" and also played in Las Ligas, Charly García's
support band.
In January of 1990 Los Siete Delfines was born; integrated by Coleman, Horacio
"Gamexane" Villafañe (guitar), Ricardo Saenz Paz (bass, keyboards
and backing vocals) and Braulio D'Aguirre (drums) they were voted 1990's best
newcomers by Clarín, being one of the few bands, if not the onlyone,
that obtained this award without having a released album. Of that time are "Dale
salid" and the excellent spanis version of David Bowie's "Heroes".
They were the supporte band in the Soda Stereo's shows and began playing in
the Buenos Aires "under" circuit (Cemento, Die Schile, Arlequines,
etc). The album would finally arrive a few years later, with Gustavo Cerati
as producer and guest. Other albums followed, like Desierto, wich also had an
interactive edition, or like "Dudosa Estrella" wich included cosee of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart.
"On times at which the great lyricists do not stand out (except for the
traditional ones), Coleman insists on a unique and particular poetry. Fascinated
by puns and an almost photographic dance of superposed images, songs like "Azulado"
(wich Soda Stereo recorded in its second LP) or the recent letters of Los Siete
Delfines are absolutely dedicated to the beauty "(G. Guerrero).

This interesting band began in 1986 with presentations in small pubs. They got to record its first album in 1987, with relative radio success. They were voted Best Newcomers of the year by Clarín. The following year they released a second album, "Patria o muerte", not as succesfull as the first one and later a live record. After the band's separation, Palo Pandolfo and Gahzarossian integrated Los Visitantes.

This group was formed in 1982 and it's consedered the first electronic / tecno group in Argentina. That year they appeared in the B.A.Rock festival with not very good results: the audience recived them with and throwed oranges and stones at them. They had the frightful misfortune of being programmed the same date that Riff. The admirers of hevy metal behaved very thoughtlessly with this three guys in overalls (in a Devo-ish style), and a coin throwed by the audience open the forehead of one of them, who had to be taken care of by the Red Cross. In 1984 Alejandro Fiori (keyboard) and Hugo Foigelman (bass, guitar) joined the band. Richard Coleman (Fricción) and Ulises Butrón (Metrópoli) also participated. The recorded two albums for independent labels wich were never released. Since 1985 Melero started producing other bands but didn't left Los Encargados. In 1986, "Silencio", their first (and only) record was released and was chosen as Best album of the Year by Clarín newspaper while the song "Sangre en el volcán" was chosen Best Song.

We have very little information of this band. We know that they were of Buenos Aires and that began playing in the 90s with the name "Homenaje a Joy Division" (Homage to Joy Division). They released and independent CD which included a cosee of Joy Division's Atrocity Exhibition; apparently they used to play covers of this band in their gigs along with their own songs.

The band forms in March of 2002 making their debut just a short time after in
the mythical Tribute to Joy Division in El Sótano, in April 2002. To
the initial formation -Marcos Ficks, Andrés Ferradas and Gabriel Muscio
(of Leo García Is Dead) and Vanina Arce- will soon
join Demián Visgarra. They have developed a very personal sound, influenced
by british punk and post punk bands like Joy Division or Bauhaus.
After playing several gigs in the "under circuit" of Buenos Aires
during wich they developed their own sound they recorded independently their
first album, "Final Feliz", which was followed by a gig in the CBGB
in January 2003. Later that year both Marcos and Demian leave the band to work
in their other project, Les Enfants. Lady Ego from the goth band RRRRRRR (from
Uruguay) became Final Feliz's singer in the Gothic BA party of november 2003.

Aitor Graña: drums
Juana La Loca was
formed by Rodrigo Martín and Aitor Graña in 1988. In 1991 they
published through Daniel Melero's independent label a cassette entitled "Autoejecución".
They were the suport band on Soda Stereo's Dynamo gig, in December of 1992 and
in 1993 they participated in the first edition of the New Argentine Rock festival
in Córdoba after which they recorded their first album, "Electronauta",
produced by Daniel Melero. In April of 1994 they were the support band on Depeche
Mode's show in Buenos Aires. In 1995 they released their second album, "Revolución",
followed by a tour through Argentina and neighbour countries. That year they
also participated in the tribute album to Sumo with the song "No duermas
más".
The third album, "Vida Modelo", was recorded in California, with the
participation of musicians like Billy Preston (keyboard in the Beatles' "Let
It Be"). This album was very popular and the band toured with Babasónicos
through the country.
In 1998, the band plays more than 60 shows; and they also were support band
on Oasis' Buenos Aires gigs. The following year, after the "Planeta Juana
La Loca" tour, Gastón Capurro, Christian Lantes, Eugenio Parracia
and Martin Bosa communicated "the dissolution of the band" due to
"the differences of criteria and objectives at personal and artistic levela
between the band and Rodrigo Martín". Rodrigo Martín answered:
"Juana La Loca has not ceased to be. These concerts have marked the end
of a stage, but also the beginning of other than contemplates a new formation,
due to personal irreconciliables differences of artistic nature with the other
members. I have made this decision with the moral right of beign the founder
and only remaining original member of Juana La Loca, composer and lyricist".
Martín summoned his old friend Gabriel Guerrisi (lider and founder of
Los Brujos, by then already dissolved) who had collaborated previously as guest
in the band's live presentations and also in recording sessions. Together they
composed the songs that would give form to "Vermouth", an independent
EP (1999).
Already signed by Art Music label, Juana La Loca releases another EP, "Alucinaciones",
and, later, "Belleza", the first complete album after four years,
with Martín, Guerrisi, the drummer Aitor Graña, bassist Diego
Panich and guitarist Julián Gómez.

in September. They released an independent EP that consists of four songs recorded

Leo Garcia is Dead (EP 2001)
He's the argie
Brian Eno. The first musician to accept without shame, rather with pride, his
lack of skill as instrumentalist. He is the leader of a new technology (samplers,
synthetizers, sequencers). He is the one who more far has taken in the argie
rock the concept of which any sonorous configuration can be music"(E.Berti).
In 1981 he founded Los Encargados, in who he combined
the rigidity of tecno with pop melodies. With this band he released "Silencio"
in 1986.
In 1988 he released his first solista album, "Conga". He was producer
for several new groups like Los Brujos, to name one. "Coleccion vacía"
was the second album, a limited edition of only one thousand copies. He approached
Soda Stereo as producer and participated in three of their records: "Canción
animal" (1990), "Rex Mix" (1991) and "Dynamo" (1992).
In 1992 he also released "Colores Santos", a side project along with
Soda Stereo's Gustavo Cerati. He explained his work with them: "the final
decisions are made by Gustavo Cerati, but I suggest other options constantly,
to enrich the work".
Melero defines his method like "appropiation and recomposing". That
is to say, he records and stores fragments of melodies, noises and soundtracks
that don't belong to him in order to listen to mix them randomly. "If I
detect a moment in wich the sounds in an interesting way, I rewrite them to
use them in my songs". "Those who say that I am not a musician are
right, somehow. Sometimes we use the same word to designate different things.
When the theater was registered in films, it happened to be called cinema. When
music could be recorded, it did not change of name. My music is bound to the
recording processes".
His album "Operación escuchar" (1995) is an instrumental work
of electronic music, that retakes the experimental way, almost left in his previous
stage, "Travesti" (1994). "Completo" it is the reedición
of "Travesti" and "Recolección vacía
In "Vaquero" he published an album in which it not only puts the accent
in melodies but also in the substance of the lyrics. "Tecno" is an
album designed with virtual sounds and music aplications downloaded from Internet.

From Témperley, in the south of Buenos Aires, this band exists since the beginning of the '90s; they've recognized many times the importance of both Joy Division and New Order -along other bands, like Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, etc- in their life and music; since the beginning they remain independent, have created their own label, Besotico Records, wich not only releases their cds but also other under/indie argie artists like Victoria Mil, She Devils or Sugar Tampaxxx. Originaly brothers Cristian and Maria Fernanda Aldana formed the band along with Omar Kischinovsky in the beginning of the '90s. At the time they released an independent cassette, "Los hijos de alien" . In 1994 their second production and first cd, also independent: "Traka traka". After five years in the band, at the end of that year Kischinovsky leaves the group and is replaced by Raymundo "Ray" Fajardo. The new formation made the album "Mundo" in 1995, that year they also participated in the tribute album to Sumo with the song "Fuck You". In 1997 they release "Esencia", three solo albums published together, a compilation of wich will apear later with the name "El otro yo del otro yo". That same year the band make several gigs as support band in Attaque 77's tour. For the following album, "Abrecaminos", of 1999 keyboardist Ezequiel Araujo (ex- Avant Press) joins the band, incorporating electronic effects and samplers to the sound of the group. With their own label, Besotico Records, they released the live album "Contagiandose la energia del otro" in 2000. At the end of 2002 they released "Colmena".

Los Planetas
(Spain)
Arisen in Granada, is the paradigmatic band of the Spanish independent rock.
Their beginnings go back to 1992, year in which they win Radio 3's demo contest
with "Mi hermana pequeña". Two years later "Super 8"
is released, a landmark of the Spanish alternative production of the decade.
The album was voted Best Album and Cover by Spiral magazine and also Best Album
of the year by the radio shows Disco pop and Disco Grande. In 1996 "Pop"
ir released, the band leaves their original "noise pop " sound. With
1998's "Una semana despues en el motor de un autobus", the band returns
to its origins, and a vindication of its guitar spirit. Their 4th release, "Unidad
de desplazamiento" (2000), was produced by themselves. Now, with ten years
of history in their back, the band has published the impeccable "Encuentros
con entidades". The participated in the Spanish tribute album to Joy Division
with the song Disorder. They've also recorded in "Super 8" the song
"Desorden" wich is related to Joy Division.

Originaly formed as a quintet in 1994 in Santiago de Chile. By the end of 1996 they released the EP "Medícame". From the beginning they had a good reception both by the public and the critic. Their first album, "Play", was released in 1997 and counted with the participation of Barry Sage who's worked, among others, with New Order; a band that Solar mentions as one of their references. The good repercussion of the album and its 3 singles allowed the release in other countries in Latin American and they played as support band on Soda Stereo's shows in Chile. In 1998 they made a tour in Chile after which two of their members leave the band. They make some shows as trio and towards the end of 1998 records some songs in independent form, next to Barry Sage again, that are released as single in 1999. After a break they returned to studio, the result is their second album, "Sábado". The band keeps playing live along 2002.

Sumo was born and died with Luca Prodan. Luca was born in Rome, son of an Italian and a Scot. The family suffered the concentration camps of the Second World War, but with time managed to recover and make certain fortune. Luca lived and studied in England and Scotland during the 70s. There he had different works related to music -worked at Virgin from where he's fired due to record stealing; security guard at concerts etc- and wrote his first songs. One of his schoolmates, Timmy Mckern, returned to Argentina in 1979 due to his father's death and later he sent to Luca a letter and photos of the province of Córdoba, where he was spending his days. In 1980, in an attempt to escape from heroin, Luca traveled to Argentina, since this country was not at that time in the heroin traffic route. He settles in Córdoba without speaking a single word of Spanish and there he meets Germán Daffunchio, brother-in-law of Timmy, and together play the guitar. Luca brought from Europe continent a good amount of music that was poorly known in Argentina at that time like Joy Division, Nick Drake, Wire, reggae to name some. The following year, he traveled again to London, to sell the department where he lived and to buy a sound equipment. He convinces his friend Stephanie Nuttall, drummer, to go to Argentina with him. Back in Córdoba, Germán introduces his friend, Alejandro Sokol to them, and they became Sumo, name that was born after looking for hours in a dictionary. Germán Daffunchio played the guitar; Alejandro Sokol the bass and Stephanie Nuttal the drums while Timmy McKern would be the manager of the band. They made their debut in February of 1982 in Caroline's, a pub in Palomar (north west of Buenos Aires). BTW, there's an unconfirmed version that claims that Stephanie Nuttal was fiancèe of Stephen Morris (before he met Gillian). There's a conection between Luca Prodan (and Sumo) and Joy Division since Luca was a big fan of them. It's said that he saw them live a few times and that he even meet the band but this is unconfirmed. Many things in Luca's life have become "legend", specially after his death.
Sumo's first important
performance was carried out in the Festival Rock del Sol a la Luna, in the facilities
of the Estudiantes Club of Buenos Aires, March 20th 1982. In the festival, attended
by 20.000 people, participated diffent bands with different styles like Riff,
Juan Carlos Baglietto, Orions and Los violadores. When the the Malvinas/Falklands
War exploded, Stephanie returned to Great Britain and Sokol started playing
drums, Diego Arnedo, a neighbor (and undoubtly, the best argie bass player),
started playing the bass guitar. Roberto Pettinato, journalist of the music
magazine "El expreso imaginario" was also invited for some shows and
later joined the band as sax player.
After some shows
in the mythical Einstein Bar of Buenos Aires and after great performances in
pubs like Stud Free and Zero the band took the lead of the argentinean underground
music movement along with Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota. But Luca
returned to England, and many thought that he wouldn't return. Nevertheless,
he returned in august 1984 to perform in the Buenos Aires Auditorium. They played
old hits of the band, some new songs and a reggae version of "Cambalache"
(a famous argie tango). The formation included Luca, Arnedo and Petinatto with
two new members: Alberto "Superman" Troglio (drums) and Ricardo Mollo
(guitar).
Luca Prodan himself
made a summary of the underground days of the band: "At first, they were
almost all songs of mine, when I played the guitar. Later the thing was changing,
entered a much more reggae wave, we unfolded ourselves in the Hurlingham Reggae
Band (that was solely reggae) and Sumo, on the other hand, it turned heavier.
Later both groups were united again, Fargo went with Patricio Rey, I went to
Europe, and when I returned with Sumo we began to play the songs of the Hurlingham...
Now Sumo is half reggae and half heavy. In a word: rare means ".
The debut album was released in 1985, it was called "Divididos por la felicidad" wich is a translation of "Joy Division" (well almost, it actually means "divided by joy"). The hit was "La rubia tarada" (whose original title was "Una noche en New York City"). They sold 15,000 copies. The second album was "Llegando los monos" (1986). They played in Obras stadium of Buenos Aires and closed the year with a show in Cemento; both Cemento and Obras stadium were a the time mayor venues for rock shows in Buenos Aires. The next year they released their 3rd album: "After chabón". They played in Obras Stadium again but Luca's health was getting worse. The band's last performance made the 20 of December of 1987 along with Los violadores. On decemeber 22th Luca was found dead, victim of a cardiac arrest and liver cirrhosis. The band played a farewell show in Luca's memory in the Chateau Rock festival in 1988. There, Pettinatto and Mollo alternated in front of the microphone to pay tribute to the bands "alma mater" in the only possible way: playing rock and roll.
After Luca's death the legend spread and many bootleg showed up. Their label decided to release a postumous album, "Fiebre", with outtakes and live performances as an atempt to fight against all those pirate editions. From the same day of their burial, hundreds of fans visit their grave in the cemetery of Avellaneda, next to Buenos Aires city. The tributes go from the classic graffity "Luca Not Dead" to burying by the tip a bottle of gin. The greater call occurs in the anniversary of his death.
In May of 1995 "Fuck You", a doble tribute album was released in wich participated Lethal, Los Pericos, El Otro yo, Los Auténticos Decadentes, A.N.I.M.A.L., Pedro Aznar, Juana la Loca y Attaque 77, among others. Finally, in 1996 and 1997 were released two albums with rare tracks covering both Luca's solo recordings and also some Sumo's.
Two groups derived
from Sumo: Divididos (with Arnedo and Mollo) and Las Pelotas (Daffunchio/Sokol).
