Caledonian Canal

Planning Stages

The Caledonian Canal trip is one of the more ambitious trips the club has to offer. It involves a paddle of 55 miles in 5 days across canals and open lochs where waves can grow to three or four foot. The trip doesn't require people to be self sufficient as the group will camp each day on a recognised campsite with the usual facilities. Hopefully some of the information on this page will be of some use to those going :

What happened

The 2004 Tour of the Caledonian Canal has to go down in the club's history as one of the most successful trips ever. With 12 paddlers paddling over 40 miles across 5 days it was one of the more ambitious trips as well. Over the next few pages you should get an insight as to how the trip went.

First Day of Paddling...
From Fort William to Gairlochy... and what a paddle, it took sooooo long!

Second Day of Paddling...
From Gairlochy to Laggan Locks... Across the first loch, Loch Lochy.

Third Day of Paddling...
From Laggan Locks to Fort Augustus... Across the second loch, Loch Oich, and more canal.

Fourth Day of Paddling...
From Fort Augustus to Inverfarigaig... The big one! Loch Ness, and half way across it.

Fifth Day of Paddling...
From Inverfarigaig to Inverness... The end of Loch Ness and the end of the paddle.

The long journey home...
A long trip home after a great week.
