2003 APA CT Open Bench Bash Results 4/6/03 Pictures for some lifters are available by clicking on their name
Women
Men
The 2003 APA CT Open Bench Bash had a great turnout with 68 lifters from 5 states showing up to battle it out. 5 WPA World records and 24 State Records were set. Special thanks to MetRx and PLUSA for providing some great giveaways. The
women got us off to a great start with Jean Putnam setting a NY State
Record in the heavyweight division and Jo-Anne Poirier setting a Master
WPA World Record. Rebecca
Crapo from MA took home the Women’s Best Lifter award with some very
nice lifting of her own. Tim
Montague won the Teen 13-15 division with another CT state record to add
to his growing collection. The
Teen 16-17 division had some terrific lifters but Michael Marzik stole
the show. 17 yr. old
Michael put on an incredible performance ending the day with a WPA World
Record lift of 440 @ 172 lbs. I
can’t wait to see what he does in the future.
The Teen 18-19 division was won by CT’s David McGowan who set a
CT State record with a big 405. The
Junior division was well stocked with the top 3 competitors all setting
CT state records. Bryan Hitchcock came out on top with a picture perfect 375.
Ernie Vega, competing in his first meet, looked like a veteran
out there with his CT State record 440.
John Syc was a terrific teen champ and continued on his record
setting ways in the Junior division with a CT State record 330.
The Submasters were won by WPA World record holder Brett
Moorehead. Brett didn’t
have his best day but still had enough to hold off some stiff
competition with 380 @ 162. Glenn
Jackson set a MA State record to take 2nd and Kevin
O’Connell and Dave Swinburne set CT State records as well.
The Master 40-44 division was another packed class with MA’s
Michael Minichiello coming out on top with a strong MA State record of
500. The Men’s Master
45-49 division was won by Vinnie Vardine of NY.
Vinnie slammed up a WPA World record 577.5 for the win.
Scott Lee hadn’t competed in quite a few years but you sure
wouldn’t have known it by his CT State record lift in this same
division. 58 yr. old Roland
Cote again took home the Best Master Lifter award with his 420 @ 217 in
the Master 50-59 division. The
Men’s 60-69 had only two competitors but they both put on quite the
show with MA’s Eeli Mard coming out on top with a WPA Master World
record 337.5 over Jerry Beals’ CT State record 290.
14 yr. old Jason Staples continues to improve and took home the
first place trophy in the 132 lb. class.
Jason Strucinski was our 148 lb. champ and broke an 11 yr. old
record with a big 345 CT State record.
The 165 lb. class was won by our submaster champ Brett Moorehead.
Mike Cannava of MA took second with his MA State record lift of
315. The 181 lb. class featured another incredible performance by
NY’s Craig Schmalz who took home the Best Lightweight Lifter award for
his effort. Craig benched a
new drug-tested WPA World record 505 @ 180.5 and just missed 515! It was an amazing display of strength and I saw Craig after
the meet helping out some lifters looking for bench advice.
The 198 lb. class was won by Tom Stucke with a great 480.
Tom is going to hit that magic 500 soon!
The 220 lb. class was won by our Best Heavyweight Lifter Peter
Barrett. Pete put up an easy 560 and just missed 585.
Craig Plante won second place with his CT State record 502.5
which just edged Michael Minichiello’s MA State record of 500.
The 242 lb. class was won by Jason Sprague with a solid 525.
Glenn Jackson had a good day winning the 275 lb. class with his
MA State record 465. The
SHW class was won by 24 yr. old Rob Weber who benched an easy 575 and
came ever so close with 600. Bill
Brauner set a NY State record in this same class with a nice 475.
Thanks again to all the lifters for coming out and showing your
support and we’ll see you in June!
