#56 Some Like It Lukewarm (The Band Contest)
Broadcast Date(s)- 3/4/68 and 8/19/68 (R)
Synopsis- Davy poses as a girl in order for the guys to be in a radio contest for mixed groups
Song(s) featured- "The Door Into Summer" and "She Hangs Out"
1-What We Learned Kids- Don't be deceitful about your appearance, It's terribly wrong to be deceitful, The KXIW Rockathon contest is bound to find out that Davy is not a girl, The guys are pretty rough on their instruments (Note: Davy slams his tambourine down during their performance breaking the cymbals in it, one of Micky's tom toms takes a walk off stage and Davy hits his forehead with Mike's guitar), Not only do girls love Davy but when Davy dresses in drag so do men, The winner of the KXIW Rockathon contest wins $500, If you need money don't act like you need money, The guys will accept contest winnings in these forms: small bills (Note: like 5's, 10's or 20's) in a guitar case, a check & small currency (Note: like gold coins or a salt wheel), Mixed groups means boys and girls not basses & baritones, peas & carrots or Republicans & Democrats, The guys choose who is going to be the girl on a volunteer basis- Mike, Micky & Peter look at Davy and volunteer him, Women are nothing but a rag, bone, and a hank of hair, A bone doesn't go with Davy's drag outfit, Davy dressed like a girl looks like a ratty hairy bone, Peter gives lessons on how to act like a feminine woman, Lessons on how to act like a feminine woman: all females must walk with small delicate steps, when a female walks from North to South her hips must move from East to West & a female must glide like a swan when she walks with her head erect and motionless, Learn to walk with small steps by tying a rope around the calf of each leg leaving a small amount of the rope between the feet, A small loud bell will teach a girl how to walk from North to South with her hips moving from East to West, Use a frying pan if you don't have a small loud bell to teach someone how to walk from North to South with their hips moving from East to West, Placing a large book on her head will teach a girl how to walk with her head erect & motionless, Use the largest & heaviest book you can to teach Davy how to walk with his head erect & motionless, Davy's 3 sisters made a lot of noise when they were learning to walk with small delicate steps, It's fun watching Davy learning how to act like a feminine female, Anything for money, The West Minstrel Abbies play a very speedy fast tempo version of "Last Train To Clarksville", William McCochran looks a bit feminine to Davy, Ways to keep Davy on stage: grab his hand when he starts walking off stage, use a hook to pull him back on stage, put your arm around him while playing guitar & hold up a stop sign, The KXIW Rockathon contest applause meter highest rating is 98.6, 98.6 seems normal to Davy, A tie in the KXIW Rockathon contest means that both groups will be back tomorrow night, Davy answers the pad's door, If Davy dates the KXIW Rockathon contest DJ the guys are a cinch to win the contest, If Davy kisses Mr. Balvat then Davy will own the TV station, Peter hides by covering his face with his hands, Davy likes tuna fish sandwiches, Davy can't stay home on a beautiful moonlit Saturday night, There is a restaurant called Some-Out-Of-The-Way-Place-That-Nobody-Goes with a Southside branch, Some-Out-Of-The-Way-Place-That-Nobody-Goes Southside branch is a great place to pick up girls, When you gotta go you gotta go, Davy always calls his shoes "he" and "she" so they don't get mixed up when he dresses in the dark, Davy dressed in drag looks like his uncle who has his picture in post offices all over the country, Davy likes to straighten Mr. Balvat's tie when he is disqualifying the Monkees from the Rockathon contest, The Monkees are a mixed group- just have the West Minstrel Abbies dance on risers behind the guys, Davy hangs out with the West Minstrel Abbies, Davy writes songs with his friend Charlie, "Girl Named Love" is one of Charlie's and Davy's first songs they wrote together, Davy has known Charlie for a number of years, Everybody has soul, Ringo Starr plays drums hard and funky on the accented 1 & 3 beats, Motown sound is on the accented 2 & 4 beats, Davy has a different kind of soul, White soul has the accent on the first & third beat while black soul has the accent on the second & fourth beat, An example of white soul is the Beatles, An example of black soul is Motown, Swing it & it's soul, Mike hears the echo of a penny whistle band & a distant caravan ("Door Into Summer" song), Your sister can teach you a thing or two ("She Hangs Out" song), Davy is interested in your sister's age ("She Hangs Out" song)
2- Papa Nez- Gives Davy and Micky a pep talk when the go to enter the KXIW Rockathon contest, Comes back to enter the contest with Miss Jones, Keeps Davy from leaving the stage during "The Door Into Summer" by putting his hand around him while playing guitar, Has Davy keep wearing his drag clothes just in case someone from the contest should come by the pad, Has Peter, Micky and himself hide when Mr. Balvat comes by to see Miss Jones, Scolds Peter for making a joke about Davy grabbing his purse when the guys decide to go out to dinner
3- Super Micky- Suggests that one of them will have to be the chick so they can enter the contest, Has a hook and stop sign in order to keep Davy from leaving the stage
4- Smart Peter- Has a book on how to act like a feminine female, Reads from the book as the guys teach Davy how to act like a feminine female, Reminds Mike and Micky to get Davy a tuna fish sandwich at the restaurant
5- Pretty Davy- Daphnie has stars in her eyes over Davy
6- Personal Rating-

7- Favorite Quotes- "Where's the girl?" "What are you a contest manager or a house dectective" (Mr. Blavat and Davy), "Oh, Miss Jones, you've snapped my mind, I love you…look what I brought you- flowers" "Oh, Mr. Blavat, you're too kind" "His mind was snapped when he came in, you know that" (Mr. Balvat, Miss Jones and Mike), "One more remark like that and I'll hit you with me purse" (Miss Jones) (Note: The best thing in this episode is the silly expressions that Mike gives to the camera during "She Hangs Out")
8- Quotes that I would most likely use in everyday conversations- "I know we need it but we don't act like we need it" (Davy), "Money money anything for money" (Micky), "Everybody's got soul" (Charlie Smalls), "Swing it and it's soul, brother" (Charlie Smalls)
9- This episode's romp/ fantasy sequence- The guys dressed in drag when deciding who will be the girl for the contest (fantasy), The guys seen performing "Last Train To Clarksville" during the West Ministral Abbies performance of the song (fantasy) and Daphne has stars in her eyes over Davy (fantasy)
#57 Monkees Blow Their Minds
Broadcast Date(s)- 3/11/68
Synopsis- Peter is hypotnotized and leaves the group to become part of a mentalist's act
Song(s) featured- "Valleri" and "Daily Nightly"
1-What We Learned Kids- Appearances can be deceiving, Don't expect a mentalist to help you with your writer's block, The guys can be easily tricked into being hypnotized, Frank Zappa is the World's famous participant & leader of the rock group The Mothers Of Invention, Mike doesn't do a good Frank Zappa, There's are a lot of crazy & zany stuff on the show, Frank getting into the psychedelic music was like a come-on-guys-let's-go kind of situation (Note: Similar to the Beach Boys' formation), Frank used to work in Hollywood a lot, Frank is sometimes known as a creative genius, Banal & insipid are hard to read especially side by side, Mike & Frank are going to join the Byrds after they quit their bands, Frank's soul in music is on the 1 & 7 sometimes on the 3 & 5, The soul of the Monkees music lies somewhere between the 1 and a half, the two and a half, the three and three quarters & the giant C major on the piano, The show is really tricky, Frank is real spiffy at conducting, Frank is dirty, gross & ugly, Mike teaches Frank how to play a car to the tune of "Mother People", The guys have an audition for a 10 week gig at The Club Cassandra, Oraculo is the World's leading mentalist, Oraculo lives at the House Of Mysteries down the alley, A mentalist has long nails, a monocle, hypnotizing potion, a cigarette in a cigarette holder & a psychic slave, Peter has writer's block, There are some things even the great Oraculo can't fix, Peter likes Oraculo's tea, It must be something about the way Peter & Mike say that Oraculo has "dishonesty, cowardness and a genuine lack of scruples", Don't look too deeply into Oraculo's eyes (Note: because all you will find is dishonesty, cowardness & a genuine lack of scruples), Peter has a habit of keeping his mouth open when he is hypnotized, Peter has perfect timing, Peter is a dumb cluck, Peter always sort of looks like a machine, Peter used to be a 1-man band, Peter can crow like a rooster, The great Oraculo never fails, Peter has crisp penetrating intelligence, The first thing psychic slave Peter is going to do is to kill Oraculo for Rudi, Rudi hates Oraculo but doesn't have the guts to tell him, Psychic slave Peter has a big mouth, Oraculo freaked Peter's mind, The pad's door is always open to Peter, When Peter wants to return to the pad write first because Micky, Davy & Mike rent out his room, Micky knows the Dewey decimal system, mystic maps & charts, 50 cents is an unfair amount to watch Peter but half a dollar is a kind & generous amount, Mike lost his memory in a horrible accident while carrying a briefcase with $50,000 in it, Mike is thoughtless, The great Dolenzo will transfer his mind into Peter's mind & Peter's mind back into Dolenzo's mind, The great Dolenzo is not the voice of Rudi's master, Don't doubt your master's voice, Micky & Davy have to transfer Peter's mind back from the spell of Oraculo's mind, Ways to get Peter's mind from being controlled by Oraculo: saw Peter in half, have some pretty girls kiss him, have Tarzan squeeze his hand, dunk his head in a bowl of water, have Tarzan swing from a rope, turn him into Mr. Schneider & carry him out of the House of Mysteries, Davy has a strong grip, Davy knows experimental psychology, Experimental psychology sounds complicated but it's not, Experimental psychology involves hitting the person with a mallet, Being home Peter will be back to his old self in no time, Micky & Davy look for Mike in a pot, under a lamp shade, inside a cup, inside a pitcher, through the glassless patio door & under the phone with the glass cake cover, The pad's old rock & chain is perfect for both fit & formal affair, Feedings at the pad are at 1 and 7, Micky is Captain Goodness, Davy is Junior Goodness, When Peter's mind is busy his answering service picks up Oraculo's calls, Psychic slave Peter is strong enough to rip the pad's old rock & chain out of the wall, You can't expect much from psychic slave Peter, The Penguin (Note: from the "Batman" TV series) catches Oraculo's show at The Club Cassandra, Oraculo act is called "Oraculo and His Four Slaves", Oraculo's act includes: levitating Peter, guessing the correct number of fingers that the audience member is holding up behind him, reading a lawyer's future, being impervious to the pain of a uninterested drunk's cigar being ground into his hand & his famous dog act, You can break Oraculo's spell by slapping the person's face, Davy's occupation is a lawyer, Oraculo sees Davy's future is assured, Oraculo predicts that at age 29 Davy will be the youngest judge ever to sit on the Supreme Court (Note: even though he is already 35), Micky catches Oraculo's show at The Club Cassandra as a uninterested drunk, Micky can grind an unlit cigar into Oraculo's hand, Rigid attention means to fall slumped over on the floor, Oraculo's famous dog act has the guys making Oraculo and Rudi do the dog trick of jumping through a hoop & the guys bark like dogs, There's no such thing as having too many dogs, It doesn't matter what you do in your act as along as you are in show business & the audience likes your act, Valleri is the kind of girl that makes you feel so good ("Valleri" song), Davy can't live without Valleri ("Valleri" song), The night is a phantasmagoric splendor ("Daily Nightly" song)
2- Papa Nez- First one to notice Peter playing his guitar backwards, Tells the guys to restart the song after Peter goofs up the first take, Compliments Micky on his dramatic take when saying to Oraculo "you freaked Peter's mind", Poses as an amnesia stricken millionaire in order to distract Oraculo while Micky and Davy retrieve Peter
3- Super Micky- Lures Rudi away from the House of Mysteries by pretending to be the great Dolenzo, Figures out that Oraculo is a fraud, Suggest Davy and him use the pad's old rock and chain to detain Peter, First to wake up from Oraculo's spell
4- Smart Peter- Seeks help for his writer's block, Thanks Micky slapping him in order to break Oraculo's spell while Davy and Mike don't
5- Pretty Davy- Kisses one of the girls (along with Micky) that were hopefully going to kiss Peter out of Oraculo's spell
6- Personal Rating-
7- Favorite Quotes- "What do you see?" "Dishonesty, cowardness and a lack of scruples" "That's too deep" (Oraculo and Peter), "You freaked Peter's mind" (Micky), "First man then Tork when is it all going to end master, when?" "Rudi, I dare ask- things are going so well" (Rudi and Oraculo)
8- Quotes that I would most likely use in everyday conversations- "You see how we worked this out in advance" (Frank Zappa), "Don't do that" (Mike and Davy)
9- This episode's romp/ fantasy sequence Micky & Davy's attempts to break Peter out of Oraculo's spell during "Valleri" (romp), Oraculo's 4 slaves as escaped convicts (fantasy) and Oraculo's famous dog act during "Gonna Buy Me A Dog" (fantasy)
